| Among
the Panch Kedars Kedarnath, 3,500 meters, is said to be the holiest and
most sacred. Standing at the head of the Mandakini Valley, Kedarnath is
ringed by lofty Himalayan peaks providing the most stunning setting. Over
a thousand years old, majestic in style and architecture, the temple is
built of massive stone slabs over a rectangular platform. One of the twelve
Jyoritlingas, this temple is one of the holiest shrines in India. The temple
has inscriptions in Pali or Brahmi. Set on the crest of a hill at an altitude of 3,886 meters is Tungnath, the highest temple in India. Legend has it that the arm of Shiva appeared here. Ravana of the Ramayana is said to have performed penance at this temple to propitiate Shiva. The temple is built of stone and is a fine model of the ancient architecture. Facing the gate of the temple is Nandi, the divine bull and Shiva's vehicle. There are two smaller temples dedicated to Parvati and Vyas in a small courtyard. Shiva is worshipped as Neelkanth Mahadev at Rudranath, 2, 286 meters. A thick forest surrounds the temple, grassy meadows covered with flowers and herbs and the stunning snow-capped peaks of Trishul and Nanda Devi. According to a legend, Shiva's face appeared here. Badrinath (3,122 meters high) is amongst the most sacred of India's holy cities and a must see on the itinerary of every pilgrim. Here sits Vishnu, the preserver, calm, serene and in deep meditation. Situated on the banks of the Alakananda with the snow-clad Neelkath peak dominating the Northern Aspect, the shrine reflects peace and serenity. The pilgrim trail takes you to four major pilgrim sites in Garhwal, trekking and camping in breathtakingly beautiful surroundings. Ponies can be provided for those who may find the trekking arduous. 6 Days of trekking 4-5 hours each day.
